Exhibition Design.

Exhibition Design for Studio 6.

One of the units we are working is to design an exhibition space for our own exhibits.
Every Year Students at HND2 and degree have the opportunity to not just exhibit there work throughout the HND course but also to design it.

The whole class had to Present a proposal so that the public watching the presentation could chose the design of their liking.

After this Presentation was set 1 project for the terrace ( Veronique Azzoppardi ) was chosen and 3 for the interior. (Steve Vella, Christian Fenech and I. )

Although these were the chosen Designs all the class has to find a way of how these designs could develop and change to a better one. Every Student has to give his or her own opinion.

The Exhibition is not far from us therefor we had to start immediately by meeting with the whole group and discussing how we could make the 3 interior projects holistic to each other.

It was our second meeting when we decided that this weekend we should work on sketches and that Monday ( Tomorrow ) we will all sort them out on a table and see what could be relevant to our idea generation.

While we were all together discussing it wasn't easy putting the 3 projects together. There were many factors which had to be arranged in the 3 projects and apart from that there is a mixture in organic and geometric shapes in the 3 designs.

First thing we did was look at the positive aspcts and negative aspects of the 3 designs and we saw what we should incorporate to a final design and what we shouldn't.

Steve's Design is made out or mainly cardboard. Therefor we all agreed that it is a very strong material which is relevant and which we could use with a low cost budget.

Christian's Design looks exteriorly beautiful and contemporary, therefor we decided to incorporate the flowing organic shapes of his design throughout the entrance and side of the room which will flow to Steve's design which leads to a geometric form.

As for mine, the main goal for my design was to create something interactive which will help students get a large amount of exposure throughout the whole exhibition experience. This included having a large book installed with all the students information and random facts about them. This will help the viewers gain an illusion relationship with the Designers.

This was mainly an overall brief explanation of what we liked and what we decided to keep from the 3 of them.

We then spoke about how we could now put them together together with other ideas of the whole team.
Though the meeting soon started going out of hand when we all had different ideas and different opinions. Which, in reality is not a bad thing !

It shows that most of us are intrigued to start this project and to create something different !

Tomorrow we are all meeting again and discussing our sketches we drew throughout the weekend. This will now help us define the different perespectives we all have so that we can deliver a final design which we are all happy about.

I will be happy to post the sketches and our development this week.
As for the project I'm very confident that we are a good team.
Time management and design development is what our goals should be !

Good luck to everyone,

Flip it !

On a previous blog I explained on the design I was going to make for Toly Products.
I continued to develop my ideas further, till I had to stop working on that design concept.

We all had to show our chosen design to the head school teachers together with the company representatives.
Before we showed anything the Company wanted to show us their latest works which were exhibited in China.

To my disbelief ! . . . One of their products had the exact same concept as mine.
I Spoke to the Representatives about the choices I had and the different designs I came up with so I could immediately start working on another concept.

Although it was a shock at that time, I actually took it as a lesson at the end.
That i had no reason to look back ! I immediately looked at the possibilities and stepped forward into a new design !

From the designs I had I chose to continue on ' Flip it '.

This concept all came to me before I went out one day.
I was applying my eyeshadow and noticed how dirty my palette always gets.

Apart from it being dirty I hated the way it mixes up the colors which makes the application uncomfortable for the user.

So from then on I wanted to design a palette which could have the shadow bases separate from each other , and also find a way how to keep the palette clean !

After sketching on paper and thinking of how I might do it i came up with using the 'Flip and turn' technique.
Basically having each shadow rotating from the midpoint.

Experimenting on the flipping technique on midpoint.

For application you basically pull the magnet plate down, turn the shadows you want to use and put the plate back up so the shadows wont rotate unconsciously.

For color indication I chose to design a set of varieties for the costumers to chose from. The colors help indicate clearly what the color on the other side is.

Varyations of how the indicators may be.

As materials i've chosen pvc plastic with a glossy finish. As I thought there's no way normal eye shadow palette could make the packaging white because of the mess they create.
With this technique when the shadows are flipped/rotated back to place, one can easily clean the surface of the box.
Also. . one could also pull out the plastic plate with the magnets and clean that too for maximum cleanliness !

I also thought about hand cleanliness ! I didn't want that the person using this product dirty's their fingers to flip them back down. . . so I attached a piece of plastic shaped and calculated from a womans
finger so that the person using it could flip it resting on that plastic panel.

As for computer Renderings I tried to assign Glossy plastic though had some difficulties !
I will try again later on tomorrow.

Also I wanted to say that as design aesthetics I wanted it to be very minimal as to give the client the liberty of wanting their own shape . . with this new easy application and cleanliness system.
It could practically be created and manufactured in any shape so I wanted the focus to be on the Function.

Good Luck Everyone !
